Manga del Brujo 2018
- Aragón - Spain
- 2018 - Garnacha-based blend
- 15.0 % Alc - 750 ml
If you love France’s iconic Châteauneuf-du-Pape, then head to the rugged Spanish region of Calatayud, where you’ll also find powerful reds starring Grenache (aka Garnacha).
Manga del Brujo was the first wine Norrel Robertson (a Master of Wine) ever made at his El Escocés Volante estate in Aragón. It’s been more than 10 years now, and not only has Manga del Brujo snapped up huge points and acclaim with each release (this 2017 boasts 94 points from Spain’s leading wine guide AND 90 points from The Wine Advocate), it’s gained almost a cult-like following with wine fans all over the world. You’ll know why as soon as you taste it …
This is a classic Châteauneuf blend of hand-harvested, old-vine Garnacha and Syrah – its Spanish accent comes from the addition of local star grapes, Tempranillo and Mazuelo. After a cool fermentation, it was aged for 20 months in cement tanks (to preserve its intense fruit character).
Look for waves of dark berry and black cherry aromas, plus inviting, savory hints of rosemary and thyme. The palate is velvety-smooth, with nuanced black pepper, licorice, and earthy notes rounding out the long, complex finish. Will really come into its delicious own with a special meal, like slow-roasted, garlicky lamb or braised beef.
With big scores and a small price, this will fly out of our cellar door – hurry for your share.
