A narrow, 75-mile-long strip of northeastern France, Alsace is one of the most under-appreciated regions of the wine world. Wedged between the Vosges mountains and the German border, and punctuated by fairytale castles, the picturesque area is an enclave of delicious aromatic white wines. Edouard Lieber Cuvée Prestige, a dry, tangy-fresh blend of Riesling and Pinot Gris, is a perfect example.
It's crafted by Maison Cattin, one of the oldest family wineries in all of Alsace. A 12th-generation family winery established in 1720, they were given the rights to the exceptional Edouard Leiber estate in the late 1990s. The acquisition gave them exclusive access to highly sought after vineyards throughout Alsace, including Hatschbourg and Pfingstberg, two of the region’s best Grand Cru sites.
This thrilling arrival is made with grapes from ideally situated southeast-facing slopes, and offers pleasing roundness and weight, with flavors of apricot, bright citrus and spice.
It’s fantastic with aged cheeses, seafood, chicken, roasted veggies or Asian and Indian cuisines, but it’s delightful solo, too—the perfect party aperitif.
