Carravacas de Primicia Reserva Rioja 2013
- Rioja - Spain
- 2013 - Tempranillo
- 14.0 % Alc - 750 ml
For perfectly aged, ready-to-drink reds that combine luscious smoothness and succulent fruit character, there’s no place like Spain. The country’s most famous region, Rioja, is home to some of the very best, and in a vintage like 2015 – officially rated ‘Very Good’ by the local wine authority – they’re even more irresistible.
Here to prove the point is this exclusive from Parker-rated winemaker Fernando Domingo. Fernando, who works his magic deep inside the historic Bodegas Casa Primicia (the oldest building in Rioja’s ancient village of Laguardia), is famously quality-driven – as you’ll taste with Carravacas de Primicia.
Crafted with 100% Tempranillo, this fine Reserva is a pure reflection of Fernando’s winemaking philosophy: “I always try to respect the fruit,” he told us at a recent tasting. Two phases of barrel aging – a year in American oak, followed by six months in French oak – helped impart smooth texture and toasty vanilla notes to the ripe, red-berry flavors.
With its mellow, fruit-forward character and food-friendly vibrance, this fine Reserva is a great pick for classic paella with shrimp, scallops, chorizo, and chicken. Grilled lamb or pork chops, or a spread of Spanish cheeses and sausages, would also be tasty partners.
