More and more, savvy wine drinkers are turning to Spain’s Rueda region, where fresh and fruity whites based on the Verdejo grape are very much in fashion. Top British wine critic Olly Smith explains why:
“If you enjoy Sauvignon Blanc, you’re also going to love Verdejo. It has a bit more texture and a lot more peachiness but still packs a thrilling zing...And the best news? You don’t have to spend a fortune to revel in the splendor of Verdejo.”
Palacio de Menade is a lovely Verdejo crafted by Ricardo Sanz, one of the region’s leading winemakers. His Sitios de Bodega estate sits at nearly 2,600 feet above sea level, and his old Verdejo vines (which he farms organically) thrive in the relatively cool climate.
Ricardo’s wines were featured at ultra-exclusive elBulli (the now-shuttered fine dining mecca, rated the No. 1 restaurant in the world three years in a row by Restaurant magazine). Vinous.com’s expert Josh Raynolds is also a big fan of Ricardo’s work—he rated a previous release of Palacio de Menade 90 points: “Lively, mineral-accented aromas and flavors of lime, green apple and fresh melon, with subtle herb and ginger accents. Nervy and taut, displaying a firm mineral backbone and a long, penetrating, citrus fruit-driven finish. This energetic wine will be very flexible with a range of foods, especially those from the ocean.”
Take Mr. Raynold’s advice and pair this up with fresh fish or shellfish dishes. And make sure you order quickly.
